The Story of the
Derek Sparks, Mike Bush, and Michael Bumpus have a powerful bond that started way before they met in person. Hailing from Southern California, these players made a name for themselves on the national stage as highly-touted athletes. Sparks, considered a high-powered Running Back from Mater Dei High School, Bush as a high-flying wide receiver and basketball star from Riverside, and Bumpus, an electric all-purpose offensive threat from Culver City. It was touchdown city on Friday nights, as they lit up the scoreboards throughout the Orange and Los Angeles Counties Southland.
Many of the nation’s top college football programs were busy collecting frequent flyer miles recruiting these players, especially Sparks and Bush who played for multiple high schools. With a promise of an escape from the fast city life and a more quality college experience, the Washington State Cougars lured Sparks (91), Bush (00), and Bumpus (04) to the Palouse to play for the crimson and gray. Not only did they signed their letters of Intent to play for the Cougs, but another fun fact that they have in common is that they all wore the same fabulous #5 jersey.
After the Game
After the game, they traded in their pads and picked up a coaching whistle and became successful high school head coaches in Western Washington. Sparks for Garfield, Bush for Kentwood, and Bumpus for Monroe. Only the game of football can make an unlikely story like this a likely one, by bringing these men together. Since that time, Sparks, Bush, and Bumpus have developed a strong bond and are giving back to the game that brought them together in the first place.
Currently, Derek Sparks is the running backs coach at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Michael Bush is the head football coach at Kentwood High School in Kent, Washington, and Michael Bumpus is the owner of Elite Training Academy in Monroe, Washington, and is a football analyst for Root Sports TV, ESPN Radio, and the Seattle Seahawks.
